Adult Day Care
You have recently noticed some changes in your loved ones behavior and you are beginning to think that he/she would not be safe at home by him/herself anymore. For whatever reason, you do not believe that someone coming into the home to help your loved one would be a good idea. Are there any other options to consider? An adult day care may be just the help your loved one needs.
An adult day care center would be a wonderful option for your loved one if he/she were not safe at home anymore. These supervised centers provide social stimulation and appropriate activities for seniors. Many of the seniors that attend adult day care centers suffer from some form of cognitive dysfunction. Others just enjoy the companionship and socialization that an adult day care center can provide. In many instances these adult day care centers will even take your loved one for some short-term overnight stays. That is really a great option if you had a planned vacation or if you just needed some time alone for yourself!
An adult day care health center is similar to a regular day care center in that they both offer some organized social stimulation. The basic difference is that the health care centers are also able to provide a variety of medical services such as monitoring seniors temperatures and blood pressure, administering medications and providing assistance with daily living activities. Most do not accept individuals who suffer from incontinence so make certain you ask about that if appropriate.
Fees for adult day care centers and adult day care health centers will vary depending on whether or you choose one associated with a non-profit organization or a private facility. Most of the time, however, the cost for either one of these will be less than the cost of providing in-home care.
When you investigate an adult day care center, remember to keep in mind the needs and limitations of your loved one. Although you may experience some initial resistance from your loved one, you will hopefully be pleasantly surprised at his/her her reaction once you visit a few facilities. Ask the facility for an activities calendar and meet the people that your loved one would be dealing with. Are you comfortable with the level of cognition that the seniors are displaying and do you think your loved one would fit in? Are you able to get the he names of any referrals? As always, prepare a list of questions beforehand and plan on spending a few hours visiting a center so you and your loved one know what to expect.
